Life zones in Alaska, range from grasslands, mountains, and tundra to thick forests, various hardy plants and wild flowers spring up during the short growing season on the semi arid tundra plains. Species of poppy are endangered. Mammals migrate across some northern areas of the state. Moose move within ranges they establish, but do not migrate seasonally or move in herds. Reindeer were introduced to Alaska as herd animals for Alaska Natives, and there are no free-ranging herds in the state. |
Geographical Features
The Alaska Range is a narrow, 650-km-long mountain range in the southcentral region of the U.S. state of Alaska, from Lake Clark at its southwest end to the White River in Canada's Yukon Territory in the southeast. It is located at 63°04′10″N 151°00′26″W . The range forms a generally east-west arc with its northernmost part in the center. A variety of factors contributed to the impressive mountains and exquisite terrains of the Alaska range, researchers say, among them earthquakes, plate tectonics, and the location of the curved Denali fault.
